Residence in Óbidos (Portugal) for writers of Granada 2023
Would you like to spend a month writing in Óbidos, Portugal, in a quiet and beautiful environment, surrounded by bookshops, so that you can develop your new literary project? After the hiatus of 2020 and 2021, Granada Unesco City of Literature and Óbidos Cidade Literaria renewed in 2022 their joint proposal of residencies for writers linked to Granada. The 2023 edition represents the definitive stabilisation of a project that has proved to be a model within the international collaborations between Unesco Cities of Literature. The originality of this project lies in the fact that it is a specific agreement between two cities, which guarantees that each year writers from one city will enjoy a residency in the other city involved.
The Residence in Óbidos 2023
Granada Unesco City of Literature and Óbidos Cidade Literaria offer a one-month residency in Óbidos, Portugal, for writers from Granada or linked to Granada, between 1 and 31 October 2023. The writer-in-residence must also, as part of the residency experience, participate in at least one public literary event, in the context of the local literary ecosystem.
Target audience
Writers born in Granada, living in Granada or who can demonstrate a connection with Granada or with any of the activities of the Granada Unesco City of Literature programme. Young and emerging authors will be especially valued, as well as the quality and projection of their work.
What does Granada have to offer?
The Granada Unesco City of Literature Programme, part of the Granada City Council’s Department of Culture, will pay for the Granada-Lisbon and Lisbon-Granada trips at the beginning and end of the residency. In addition, it will give the resident author a stipend of 300 euros in payment for his/her participation in a public literary event in Óbidos.
What does Óbidos offer?
Óbidos Cidade Literaria will provide transport from Óbidos to Lisbon and from Lisbon to Óbidos at the beginning and end of the residencies, as well as free accommodation in a fully equipped and modernised room in an old rural house from 1 to 31 October 2023. In addition, the resident author will be invited to participate in a public literary event in the context of the local literary ecosystem.

Selection criteria and date of publication of the winner’s name
The Granada Unesco City of Literature programme will select the resident author, preferably young and/or emerging, on the basis of the quality and projection of his/her literary project. The name of the selected resident author will be published in granadaciudaddeliteratura before 5 September 2023.
