Residence in Óbidos for writers and translators from Granada – edition 2024

Would you like to spend a month writing in Óbidos, Portugal, in a quiet and beautiful environment, surrounded by bookshops, so that you can develop your new literary project? After the hiatus of 2020 and 2021, Granada Unesco City of Literature and Óbidos Cidade Literaria renewed in 2022 their joint proposal of residencies for writers linked to Granada. The 2023 edition represents the definitive stabilisation of a project that has proved to be a model within the international collaborations between Unesco Cities of Literature. The originality of this project lies in the fact that it is a specific agreement between two cities, which guarantees that each year writers and translators from one city will enjoy a residency in the other city involved.

Granada Unesco City of Literature and Óbidos Cidade Literaria offer a one-month residency in Óbidos, Portugal, for writers and translators from Granada or linked to Granada (or, ultimately, to the activities of the Granada Unesco City of Literature programme), between 1 and 31 October 2024. As part of the residency experience, the resident must also participate in at least one public literary event, in the context of the local literary ecosystem.

Writers and translators who were born in Granada, who live in Granada or who can prove that they have had a link with Granada or with any of the activities of the Granada City of Literature Unesco programme. Special consideration will be given to young and emerging authors, as well as to the quality and projection of their work and/or the specific project to be developed during the residency.

The Granada Unesco City of Literature programme, part of the Granada City Council’s Department of Culture, will pay for the Granada-Lisbon and Lisbon-Granada trips at the beginning and end of the residency. In addition, it will offer the resident a stipend of 400 euros for their participation in a public literary event in Óbidos, on a date yet to be decided, and as compensation for the costs of the residency.

Óbidos Cidade Literaria will take care of the transfer from Óbidos to Lisbon and from Lisbon to Óbidos at the beginning and end of the residency, as well as free accommodation, from 1 to 31 October 2023, at the Josefa de Óbidos Residence, a fully equipped and modernised accommodation in an old rural house in the centre of Óbidos. In addition, Óbidos Cidade Literaria will invite the resident author to participate in a public literary event within the prestigious international FOLIO festival.

The Óbidos International Literature Festival (FOLIO) held its first edition in 2015 and has become one of the main literary events in Portugal. It is also a crucial initiative in the local development strategy of the municipality of Óbidos.

With a diversified programme that takes place over eleven days, Folio is divided into several strategic programme areas: Folio Authors, Folio Education, Folia, Folio Illustration and Exhibitions.

Among the various initiatives, visitors will find exhibitions, concerts, master classes, book presentations, lectures, seminars, performances, meetings with authors, film series, among many other activities.

Writers applying for a residency must fill in an application form in which they must state, among other information, the literary project they intend to develop during their stay. The 2024 application form can be downloaded here:

It should be duly completed and sent to Jesús Ortega:
