On Saturday 11 May 2024, at 12:30 pm, in the Sala Talleres of the Centro Federico García Lorca, a new meeting of the cycle of poetry readings “Sábado en armas” will take place. On this occasion, the event will be attended by the Cuban poet Isel Rivero.

“Sábado en armas” is a monthly cycle of poetry readings organised since 2022 by Granada Unesco City of Literature and the Golden Tooth Association, in collaboration with the Federico García Lorca Centre. Chantal Maillard, Olvido García Valdés, Ángeles Mora, Andrés Neuman, Chus Pato, Berta García Faet, Erika Martínez, Jairo García Jaramillo, María Ángeles Pérez López and María Negroni are some of the poets who have taken part.

Isel Rivero was born in Havana in 1941. She published her first book in 1959. She was co-founder with José Mario Rodríguez of the literary group El Puente before leaving Cuba in 1960. She studied in New York and developed her professional life at the United Nations in New York, Vienna, Namibia, Honduras, Rwanda and Madrid. In 1985 she created the feminist institute Sisterhood is Global with the writer and activist Robin Morgan. She settled in Madrid in 1996. Some of her latest books are: Relato del horizonte (Endymion, 2003), which brought together all her poetry to date; Las palabras son testigos, a bilingual edition of her texts in English, translated into Spanish by the poet Benito del Pliego (Verbum, 2010); De paso (Amargord, 2011); El jardín hambriento (La Palma, 2017); and the anthology Polaris (Olé Libros, 2021). In 2023 Tigres de Papel republished El banquete, in the collection directed by the feminist association of women poets Genealogías.

Yaiza Martínez was born in Gran Canaria in 1973. She is a poet and storyteller. She has published the poetry collections Rumia Lilith (2002), El hogar de los animales Ada ( Devenir, 2007), Agua ( Idea, 2008), Siete-Los perros del cielo (Leteo, 2010) and Caoscopia ( Amargord, 2012); as well as the plaquette El argumento de la realidad ( 2014), in the Colección Poética y Peatonal. Exemplar Único by the Argentinean artist Gabriel Viñals. In 2016 he published La nada que parpadea ( eme, Ediciones La Palma) and in 2021 he reissued the collection of poems Tratado de las mariposas in Ediciones Tigres de Papel. In 2022, her book La escuela de las órbitas ( Olé Libros) was published and in 2023 a compilation of short stories entitled Naturaleza de la luz (Nature of Light) was published by Eolas Ediciones. She is also the author of the novels Las mujeres solubles and Interbrain. She has been included in various anthologies and joint books, such as Poetas en blanco y negro. Contemporáneos (Abada Editores, 2006), Limados ( Amargord, 2016), Traslúcidas ( Bartleby, 2016) and Sombras di-versasSeventeen current Spanish women poets (1970-1991) (Vaso Roto, 2017).
