Granada UNESCO City of Literature Program, in cooperation with Association Diente de Oro, and the Federico Garcia Lorca Centre, will organize in March 21, 2017 a long-range poetry recital to celebrate the World Poetry Day.
Inn 1999, UNESCO proclaimed in Paris, March 21 as the World Poetry Day. The observance of World Poetry Day is also meant to encourage a return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, to promote the teaching of poetry, to restore a dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and to support small publishers and create an attractive image of poetry in the media, so that the art of poetry will no longer be considered an outdated form of art, but one which enables society as a whole to regain and assert its identity.
On March 21, 18 bookshops of the city of Granada will hold a long-range poetry recital led by 45 poets connected to the city of Granada, among which there are three National Poetry Prize Winners: Rafael Guillén, Ángeles Mora and Luis García Montero. Among the main objectives of this event are to bring people of the city to the poetry universe, thus becoming familiar with their best poets and with the tradition of public readings; to promote bookshops as cultural and meeting venues, giving them a visual and renewed look; to launch an image of Granada as a literary and cultural city.
The recitals will have a maximum length of 20 minutes each and will be held between 6 and 9 p.m. The participating poets have published, at least, one book of poems; they live in Granada and their ages, career paths and aesthetic plans are very diverse. The audience will have at hand information leaflets with the bookshops and their poets outlined, which will give them the opportunity to choose among all the poets by likes and preferences. Each participating bookshop has committed to offer the audience from 10 a.m.to 9 p.m., either a special discount on the purchase of a poem book or a gift.
